What We Believe Print E-mail

The Cross - the foundation of our faith Amble Church is a place to grow and learn.  We do not have all the answers, nor do we believe that we have the only solution.  We are learning and trying to live our faith.  We believe that exploring faith together allows us all to grow closer to God.

We believe in a God that is loving and good.  Who has provided us with all that we have.  Who helps us enrich our lives.  Who loves us even when we do not return that love.  We believe that everything we do is a response to God’s love.  We often call God’s love grace, because it is characterized by unconditional love and forgiveness.  This grace was given to us before we could do anything to deserve it.  So all we do, even our belief in God is our response to God’s gift of love.

The greatest gift God has given us is Jesus Christ, the son of God.  Through his life we are taught and shown what real love is and through his death and resurrection we become aware of forgiveness and new life.  Through Jesus Christ we also realize that we are not perfect, that we have failed and will fail again.  But we also learn the power of God’s love to forgive.  Jesus Christ continues to be present with us today, helping us draw closer to God, leading us through life’s trials, and filling us with all that we need.  There are three principle ways that we experience Christ’s presence: through the Word of God, in worship, as the Church.

We believe that Jesus Christ is the Word of God (John 1:1).  The Bible is the record of that Word.  We believe that the Bible provides us with ways to understand God’s will and desire for us, insight into how we are to live, and means for growing closer to God.  We are called to study the Bible that through interpreting it for today we might realize Christ’s presence with us.  As we read it we are challenged to hear what God has to say to our lives.

Worship is the opportunity to offer praise to God and experience God’s presence with us.  Worship can happen anywhere at any time.  But one of the principle experiences of worship is our weekly worship time.  During worship we offer song, read scripture, listen to an interpretation of scripture and share in the sacraments of the church.  We believe in two sacraments, Holy Communion and Baptism.  In these sacraments we are made uniquely aware of Christ’s presence.

The journey of faith is often a circuitous pathThe Church is more than a building or place; it’s the people.  We believe that as we gather together (in worship, service to others, or fellowship) Christ is present with us and we become the presence of Christ to the world.   Getting together as the Church helps us understand what the life of faith is about, how we are to live, and empowers us to do it.  Part of our calling as the Church and as individuals is to help and care for others.

We believe that the life of faith is ever growing and developing.  It is a journey, a process, an experience.  To set out on this journey is to link faith to life.
